A valued and key relationship

Wellington City Council
Wellington City Council is the largest landowner of the land that is home to our beloved Wellington trails. Their support for Trails Wellington is critical to our success. Our community has relationships at many levels across the Council.

WCC Operational Support
Our trail builders and volunteer groups work closely with the WCC Parks, Sport and Recreation (PSR) park rangers and the WCC Trail Projects team. WCC PSR staff and contractors provide massive support to our volunteer trail groups and across all our trail areas. This includes weed control, cutting back vegetation growth that encroaches onto our trails, and providing our volunteers with small native plants to support volunteer planting efforts. WCC operational support also includes providing surfacing materials, removing blockages from trails and helping resolve user conflict issues.

WCC Project Support
The WCC PSR Projects team provides invaluable assistance to TW and our trail areas - whether it is advice and guidance around the viability of new trail ideas, assisting us through the WCC planning process, or hands-on advice and support to our trail builders. They project manage our rebuilds and new trail builds from the WCC perspective. We have recently been sharing project investment plans with the WCC Projects team with a view to aligning our mutual investment plans towards the best outcomes for our community.

Planning
THE WCC Planning team oversees and updates WCC policies and plans that govern how our green spaces are managed and the activities that are permitted in them. This includes key plans such as the Outer Green Belt Management Plan, the Town Belt Management Plan, and the Open Space Access Plan. Their support helps us navigate the complex processes and rules that need to be followed in order for new trails to be included in WCC plans and, therefore, permitted to be built. The WCC Planning Team manages community consultation and stakeholder engagement, which are critical to planning decisions. How TW and our community engage with WCC planning is critical to adopting our new trail priorities the viability of new trail ideas, assisting us through the WCC planning process or hands-oninto WCC plans.

WCC Leadership and Councillors
We're grateful for all the support we’ve received from WCC to date. Most new trail and WCC investment decisions require support from the majority of WCC Councillors. Our relationship with WCC leaders and Councillors is of particular importance in this area. We believe that there is so much potential for Wellington, and we love that so many of the WCC leadership increasingly see the benefits of the vision we have painted for Wellington. We believe that by working together, we can realise the vision we have outlined. The benefits of trails to our city are immense. We need widespread support within WCC and our community for our vision for Wellington and the Masterplan. Trails Wellington needs to continue to deliver a loud and coherent message to our Council on how investment in trails can improve the health of our citizens, enhance our environment and improve our economy.
