Super D Jumps, Matairangi / Mt Vic.

What do many of our youth riders love spending their time doing on a mountain bike? Jumps, jumps and more jumps, especially with whips. After the success of building jump lines at Con Air in Miramar, Trails Wellington (TW) recognised the need for more areas to have jumps, especially with the ability for riders to progress from small and safe jumps to more challenging ones. Tabletop jumps are such a good way to build up your confidence, as coming up short generally just means a slightly harder landing, but generally not a crash.
With this in mind, Trails Wellington set about creating/rebuilding 3 great trails in Matairangi that all contained progressive jumps. The first job was to take a digger into Hippys and reform the original jumps, making them smooth, flowy and nicely sized to allow for progression. Next on the list were Saddle Jumps - these were made into small tabletops, perfect for beginners. A favourite for our WORD riding clinics. Super easy to session multiple times.
Next up was a new jump area right next to, and run parallel to, Alexandra Rd that started out being called Hospital Jumps. Unfortunately, a few riders ended up crashing on these larger tabletops and several in fact, ended up in the hospital. It wasn’t long before the team was back in redesigning these jumps to improve safety by improving the landings and reducing the amount of time riders would spend in the air. The Council also suggested a new name be given - hence they are now called Super D Jumps. Super D Jumps include a collection of three tabletop jumps and a step-up. They are very popular due to the short pedal back to the top, making it easy to do multiple laps.
They are reasonable-sized jumps similar to Te Tuarā across the road. On a clear day, they can make for impressive viewing. Walkers often stop to watch as they head to and from the lookout, enjoying the spectacle framed by thriving native plants. If you want to watch numerous kids whipping it like pros, this is the place to go.
TW contracted OnTrack Trail Builders to build (and then rebuild) these jumps. They did a great job creating a fun set of jumps that most riders can enjoy.
Maintenance of the Super D Jumps is by Matairangi Trail Builders.
